2020 Winter – Week 2 Recap
JRHL Winter 2020 Week 2 – Monkeys beat the Iguanas in the dying seconds, Parrots remain rolling and the Jaguars fall to the Barracudas.
Orange Iguanas: 7 – Green Monkeys: 8
The Iguanas and Monkeys both looked to right the ship after a disappointing week 1. It was the Iguanas that got off the hot start though, with Tim George getting the scoring going. Both teams created chances all period the Iguanas led 3-1 after the 1st. The 2nd period was a mirror image of the 1st, but this time it was the Monkeys who were controlling the game. During the period Iguanas goaltender Tyson Botteicher frustrated with not getting a whistle when the net was knocked off, Botteicher decided to channel his inner Henrik Lundqvist, flipping the net and gave the Monkeys a powerplay opportunity. Fortunately for the Iguanas, they were able to kill off the penalty but unfortunately for the Iguanas, the period ended in favor of the Monkeys who were the dominant team and outscored the Iguanas 4-1. The 3rd period ended in a thrilling fashion, with the Monkeys leading by 2 with less than 2 minutes left, Tim George scored his 2nd of the game and with little time left, Nate Seidel scored the tying goal. However, the Monkeys were able to get one last chance in the dying seconds of the game. John Poloyac took a shot from his own zone which ended up in the back off the net and gave the Monkeys all 2 points and their 1st win of the season.
Purple Parrots: 16 – Silver Snakes: 11
The Parrots looked to continue where they left off last week and last year’s champions the Silver Snakes looked to find their footing in week 2. The Snakes came out firing with 2 quick goals. But the Parrots answered back with Adam Seidel getting them on the board which got the momentum back for the Parrots. The floor was tilted in favor of the Parrots for the remainder of the period as they outscored the Snakes 7-3. The Silver Snakes did eventually find their footing and answered Parrots in the 2nd period. With the line of Pat Callahan, Todd Kamzik and Keith Mock all putting up big offensive numbers. The Snakes ended the period outscoring the Parrots 7-3 and got themselves right back into the game. At the start of the 3rd period, we had ourselves a tied game at 10 apiece. Unfortunately for the Snakes, they looked like a different team in the 3rd. The aging team was missing their young superstar Nolan Mock and it really showed in the period with the Snakes looking like they had nothing left in the tank. The Parrots took full advantage of that and sent 6 goals past Bird to win the game with a final of 16-11.
Red Jaguars: 5 – Blue Barracudas: 8
The classic Red vs Blue matchup was this week’s Game of The Week and also marked the return of Bernie Seth, who was returning from a long term injury that ended his season in the first campaign. The Barracudas came out flying in the 1st period of play, dominating the majority of the period. Cory Mesteller, who has really found his scoring touch this season, got the Barracudas on the board first. After 2 unanswered goals, the Jaguars finally got on the goal sheet when Travis Turchak put one into the back of the net, continuing the theme of defenders having big nights in week 2. It was more tight hockey in the 2nd and Blue Barracudas forward Brandon Curtis was even willing to cheat to score as he attempted to punch the ball into the back of the net. The 2nd period ended with the Jaguars scoring 2 and the Barracudas with 1. With the game tied going into the 3rd period, the Jaguars were given a great opportunity early in the 3rd. On his return, Bern Gretzky took down Bryce Bostian with a trip and gave the Jaguars a powerplay opportunity. However, it was the Barracudas who would score first when Nate James scored a shorthanded goal. Luckily for the Jaguars, they would also get a powerplay goal. After the penalty, the Barracudas started to take control of the game. The Barracudas scored 2 quick goals forcing the Jaguars to take a timeout to try to regroup. But, the Jaguars were never able to recover and the game ended with the Barracudas coming out on top, after outscoring the Jaguars in the 3rd 5-2.
