Week 5 – Recap

JHRL Week 5 – Purple Parrots capture their first win, Red Jaguars remain unbeaten, Silver Snakes hand the Barracudas their second straight loss.

Purple Parrots: 12 – Orange Iguanas: 10

Last week we saw the “battle of the unbeaten”, this week featured two teams trying to find their first win. The Purple Parrots have been trending up in recent weeks and built off the momentum of last week’s shootout loss, to capture their first win. A surprising face lead the way for the Parrots, Zak Kuzmyak, who exploded for 6 goals! A performance like that should be considered for 1st star of the week. Zak didn’t do it all himself however, Chad Davis and Adam Seidel combined for 15 total points while rookie goaltender, Jarod Adams, did enough to give his team the edge. The Iguanas did not go down without a fight. They needed some people to step up in the absence of their number 1 draft pick, Zack Wesner. Austin Smay and Travis Turchak were up to that task. Each of them collected 5 points in the loss while Smay’s points all came via goals. It was a rough first half of the season for the Iguanas but they should not be taken lightly in the second half.

Green Monkeys: 5 – Red Jaguars: 12

For the 4th time in 5 weeks, the Red Jaguars faced a team that didn’t have their first-round draft pick. However, I’m not sure the presence of Bryan Scott would have helped much in this one. The Green Monkeys could not match the relentless pressure provided by the Jaguars and quite possibly played their worst game of the year. The Jaguars had a group effort, with every player notching at least 3 tally’s on the score sheet. It’s no surprise Poloyac and Reed lead the way again with 7 and 6 points respectively. Jaguars goaltender Ryan Akers seemed bored in net during the majority of this one as the Monkeys just couldn’t get anything going. The only bright note for the Monkeys was the fact that each player recorded points in the game but unfortunately for them, the win column is the only stat that matters and the Monkeys are now 2-4. The Jaguars sit at the top of the league at the midway point while the Monkeys cling to the last playoff spot.

Silver Snakes: 14 – Blue Barracudas: 5

The Silver Snakes have now rattled off 4 straight wins since their home opener defeat against the Red Jags (note: Tim George and Goaltender Bird were not present for that game) and the Blue Barracudas find themselves suffering back to back losses. This game never got off the ground in ways of excitement as the Snakes lead 6-0 after one and 13-1 after two. Brian Terek lead all scorers with 5 twine ticklers. Tim George and Nolan Mock also found themselves with a hat trick as they try and track down Poloyac at the top of the leaderboard for points. Goaltender Brandon Bird has been on the horn all week self-proclaiming his third period Dominick Hasak type save as “Save of the Year”. I wouldn’t be doing my job as a reporter if I didn’t note his sprawling effort for the save in the third but it looked more like the shooter was off his game. None the less Bird has his team rolling as the Red Jaguars come to town next week. This game will surely post Game of the Week interest as both teams claim they deserve to be at the top. The Blue Barracudas will look to bounce back against a Parrots team who now has a taste of
victory and who surely want another bite.
