Week 6 – Recap
JHRL Week 6 – Green Monkeys continue to hold on to the last playoff spot, Davis wins it for the Parrots in dramatic fashion, Silver Snakes hand the Jaguars their first loss.
Orange Iguanas: 8 – Green Monkeys: 9
With the first half of the season over the Orange Iguanas were looking to turn the page. The Iguanas got off to a strong start with Jason Mirobelli getting the scoring started. The 2nd period, however, continues to haunt the Orange Iguanas with the Green Monkeys dominating the period and outscoring the Iguanas 7-4. Cory Mesteller led the Monkeys with 4 goals in the period. Both goalies were solid in the 3rd period only allowing a goal a piece and the Monkeys were able to hold on to win the game by one. There was an injury scare in the 2nd period for defender Bernie Seth, after a freak collision with Austin Smay. Seth did return for the 3rd period but his availability going forward is unknown.
Blue Barracudas: 12 – Purple Parrots: 13
After a big win last week the Parrots were looking to carry that momentum over against the Blue Barracudas. The Blue Barracudas had a streak of their own, but it’s a streak they were looking to break after losing the last 2. The Barracudas got off to a quick start leading the 1st period 5-1 at one point. The Parrots did not quit and battled back in the 1st and the period ended 6-5 in favor of the Barracudas. The 2nd period ended up with both teams trading blows and ended with both teams scoring 5 goals. However, the Parrots took control of the game in the 3rd period outscoring the Barracudas 3-1 with the game-winner coming dramatically as Seidel fed Davis at the point who buried a slapper past substitute goalie Steve Tomkowski. It did look like the Barracudas were going to force overtime in the dying seconds of the game but Jared Adams was up to the task making a save of the year candidate to close out the game. The Parrots are red hot right now with the last playoff spots in sight. The Blue Barracudas, who now lost their last 3 games will be looking to steady the ship against an Orange Iguanas team who is still looking for their first win.
Silver Snakes: 13 – Red Jaguars: 10
The game of the week featured the rematch of two heavyweights with first place in the standings on the line. After missing the first match between the two, Tim George was available for this one, much to the enjoyment of Snakes Goaltender Brandon Bird that Ryan Akers would be facing a first-round draft pick. It was back on fourth in the 1st with each team scoring 4. Both John Poloyac and Tim George looked to be on a mission to secure the 3 points for their team. The Silver Snakes took control of the game in the second period outscoring the Jaguars 5 to 1. In the 3rd period, Duane Reed finally got on the board who was held pointless until then and the Jaguars won the period, but at the end, The Silver Snakes did enough to take home the 3 points and takeover 1st place in the standings.
Wow, what a weekend of hockey in the JRHL. This was easily the best weekend the league has had yet, with every game being extremely close. With only 4 games left in the regular season, it looks every point is going to matter for positioning. The Parrots are on the outside looking in right now but it is still possible for them to even jump into the 3rd spot. We could be looking at Goals For being the difference-maker on who gets the last playoff spot its that close.
